Our organizations, supported by a grant from Bread and Roses, in 2013 organized very well-attended workshops “How to Run for Judge of Elections and Election Inspector,” and in 2014 even better attended workshops on “How to Run for Committeeperson.”

The success of these workshops was largely due to Commissioner Singer and her staff who provided a wealth of information--information which has always been available to political insiders but not readily available to the general public. Commissioner Singer conducted workshops not only for our organizations but for any non-partisan civic group which requested this.

Commissioner Singer made a powerful case for the critical role played by committeepeople. She cited a body of research demonstrating that the most effective way to encourage people to vote is having a neighbor/friend speak to them directly. Nothing is as powerful as personal contact with someone you know and trust.

The Philadelphia Chapter of the National Organization for Women and the Philadelphia Chapter of the Coalition of Labor Union Women concluded its series of workshops on how to run for committeeperson and for election board with “A workshop for new committeepeople: The ward re-organization meeting,” held immediately after the May 2014 primary election. This is the meeting at which committeepeople are officially seated and the ward leader is elected. This can be a very confusing experience for new committeepeople who might not know the party rules and not know what to expect.

Again Commissioner Singer generously shared her information about how the Democratic Party and the Republican Party are governed not only with our group but with any non-partisan civic group which requested this. Attendees were very grateful for Commissioner Singer’s demystification of the process.

Committeeperson elections are the only elections for which ordinary citizens without connections and financial resources can easily run. It is critically important that citizens have information about how to run for committeeperson and we applaud Commissioner Singer for her commitment to educating the public about the political process.

Organization for Women will hold its 2013 Convention on Saturday,
September 28th at the Harrisburg Hilton, from 9AM-5PM. Register online at PANOW2013.Eventbrite.com
(flyer with more info here). It's a chance to attend workshops and get up to
date on the issues you care about and to connect with fellow feminists
from around the state. It's also the time when NOW members will elect
new state leadership.

I am a candidate for President of Pennsylvania NOW.
It's time to change the conversation about feminist issues in this
state. My main goal for PA NOW is to promote a Women's Equality Agenda
for Pennsylvania that begins with a comprehensive Reproductive Health
Care bill and a Pay Equity bill. Reproductive health means more than
access to safe abortion, it means sex education, access to birth
control, and high quality prenatal and maternity care. Pay equity means
not only narrowing the wage gap and pushing for affordable child care,
but passing basic worker rights like earned sick time and raising the
minimum wage so workers can better support their families. I hope to
help PA NOW empower feminists to empower themselves by providing the
tools, opportunities, and statewide feminist network to help move women
into leadership roles in their communities and government.

If you're a NOW member attending the Convention, you can vote for me.
I am running on a slate with wonderful women from across the state: for
Vice-President, Michele Hamilton (Centre County); for Secretary, Susan
Woodland (Erie County); and for Treasurer, Betsy Parziale (Montgomery
County). But whether you're a member or not, you should come to the
Convention. Our program includes workshops like:

The Importance of Social Security & Medicare for Women
How I Met Your Movement: Involving Millenials in Reproductive Justice
Thank You Diego, but We'd like to Hear about Frida: Women Engaged in the Arts Community
LGBT Equality in Pennsylvania
Domestic Violence: Prevention, Intervention & Treatment Strategies Empowering Women
Financial Literacy: How to Preserve & Maximize Your Income and Investments
Documenting Our History & Celebrating Grassroots Activists
and More!

We are honored this year to have "Liberal Lion of the Senate" State Senator Daylin Leach as our Guest Speaker for Lunch, so when you register for the Convention, register for this lunch as well.
Senator Leach is a terrific speaker, and one of our strongest
supporters in the General Assembly. Lunch is at the Hilton and is an
additional $25. All proceeds benefit NOW.

Registration begins at 8AM, or you can register online at PANOW2013.Eventbrite.com.
Tickets include breakfast, access to all workshops, and an
after-Convention reception with the Central Pennsylvania Womyn's Chorus.

ignoring the trial of Kermit Gosnell, the unlicensed physician and
abortionist who ran a clinic in West Philadelphia for 31 years. Gosnell
was indicted in January 2011 for the horrific murders of babies, and
patients who had come to him seeking late-term abortions. I can’t vouch
for the entirety of the “mainstream media,” but I can tell you that here
in Philadelphia, the scene of the crime, there has been plenty of press
(search Gosnell at Philly.com, for starters) since Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams first filed the Grand Jury report indicting Gosnell with 7 counts of first-degree murder and one instance of third-degree murder.

Gosnell is a murderer (alleged, as his trial is not over). I am
pro-choice, meaning I believe individual women should make decisions
about if and when they will be parents. I do not believe that zygotes
are entitled to civil rights. But, as the law states, babies are. And
that’s why Gosnell is now on trial, because he murdered babies and
women. As for Gosnell, really nothing more need be said about him than
that.

But not only has much more been said, much more has been done in the
name of outrage at Kermit Gosnell. Using the fact of Gosnell as
self-righteous cover, the Republican-dominated General Assembly in
Pennsylvania pushed through a bill
to add another completely unnecessary layer of regulation to
stand-alone abortion providers in the state, forcing them to meet the
code for ambulatory facilities, changes which include, for instance,
major alterations to the physical plant that have not a thing to do with
ensuring safety for women during abortion. And that’s because the law
wasn’t about safety or women, it was about regulating lawful abortion
providers out of business. Some “pro-life” advocates of the bill at that
time did not bother to hide their glee, although they were careful to
wrap it up in outrage about Gosnell.

Michael McMonagle, president of the Pro-Life Coalition of Pennsylvania, said he hoped clinics would close.
“The other side claims that 17 of the 20 facilities in Pennsylvania
would close down, and to be candid, I hope that’s true,” McMonagle said.
“But I don’t think that is true. We see this as a small step toward the
day when all women and children in Pennsylvania are protected from
abortion.”

The Pennsylvania General Assembly is now set to pass SB 3,
a bill that would ban abortion coverage in the state insurance
exchanges, which would have the no doubt intended effect of eliminating
it as a private insurance offering. Which is a huge health problem for
pregnant women, because, as adults know, not all pregnancies go
according to plan. But, as the majority of elected state representatives
seem to believe that women need to be protected from abortion, rather
than provided a safe, stigma-free way to exercise their legal right to
an abortion, it will likely pass. These bills are called TRAP bills, Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers. They are happening all over the country. A lot of people are very sure they will miraculously stop abortion. But history and evidence shows otherwise.

For many feminists, though, the question is why did women go to
Gosnell in the first place? His clinic did not have a great reputation.
Why didn’t they go to Planned Parenthood? The original grand jury report
is careful to depict the differences between Gosnell’s facility and
abortion providers who scrupulously adhere to the letter of the law and
fiercely protect the rights and privacy of the women who come to them.
Despite the stringent oversight on the books of abortion providers by
Pennsylvania, Gosnell’s clinic was routinely given a pass even though
over the years numerous code violations were noted.

In testimony given before a Senate Committee upon Gosnell’s
indictment, former patients indicated they went there because Gosnell
was cheap, and because there were no protesters in front of his clinic.
Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams testified before a State Senate Committee to the blind eye turned by the state departments charged with oversight.
From the grand jury report:

There were several oversight agencies that stumbled upon
and should have shut down Kermit Gosnell long ago. But none of them did,
not even after Karnamaya Mongar’s death. In the end, Gosnell was only
caught by accident, when police raided his offices to seize evidence of
his illegal prescription selling.

Various local hospitals dealing with patient consequences of botched
abortions, the National Abortion Federation, and even the Pennsylvania
Department of Health itself all noted ways in which Gosnell’s clinic
violated regulations. Due to the politics surrounding abortion, though,
the Health Department decided to stop inspecting abortion providers
altogether.

…the Pennsylvania Department of Health abruptly decided,
for political reasons, to stop inspecting abortion clinics at all. The
politics in question were not anti-abortion, but pro. With the change of
administration from Governor Casey to Governor Ridge, officials
concluded that inspections would be “putting a barrier up to women”
seeking abortions. Better to leave clinics to do as they pleased, even
though, as Gosnell proved, that meant both women and babies would pay.

Even when physicians personally complained about Gosnell to the State Health Department, no action was taken against him.

Several different attorneys, representing women injured
by Gosnell, contacted the department. A doctor from Children’s Hospital
of Philadelphia hand-delivered a complaint, advising the department that
numerous patients he had referred for abortions came back from Gosnell
with the same venereal disease. The medical examiner of Delaware County
informed the department that Gosnell had performed an illegal abortion
on a 14-year-old girl carrying a 30-week-old baby. And the department
received official notice that a woman named Karnamaya Mongar had died at
Gosnell’s hands. Yet not one of these alarm bells – not even Mrs.
Mongar’s death – prompted the department to look at Gosnell or the
Women’s Medical Society.

The Department of State, which oversees the licensing of physicians, had just as much reason to investigate Gosnell:

…in many ways State had more damning information than
anyone else. Almost a decade ago, a former employee of Gosnell presented
the Board of Medicine with a complaint that laid out the whole scope of
his operation: the unclean, unsterile conditions; the unlicensed
workers; the unsupervised sedation; the underage abortion patients; even
the over-prescribing of pain pills with high resale value on the
street.

Only because the FBI was investigating Gosnell for the illegal sale
of narcotics was the lid blown off of Gosnell’s shop of horrors. Why?
The grand jury report hazards a guess:

Bureaucratic inertia is not exactly news. We understand
that. But we think this was something more. We think the reason no one
acted is because the women in question were poor and of color, because
the victims were infants without identities, and because the subject was
the political football of abortion.

So, Kermit Gosnell is on trial, along with several of his employees. What about officials at the Health and State Departments who neglected their duties even in the face of murder? Any charges there? Not yet.

“…some unidentified state officials involved with the case, but who have
not been charged with any crime, are billing taxpayers six figures and
counting for outside counsel and are no longer cooperating with
prosecutors.

And the Republican-sponsored bills to make abortion in Pennsylvania
inaccessible, will the laws Pennsylvania passed and plans to pass
prevent the horrors of Gosnell? No, they will not. They will make them
more ubiquitous. Women who want an abortion and can afford it will go to
the safe, legal clinics and pay the prices that continue to rise as
more TRAP laws are put in place. Low-income women, restricted from using
Medicaid or other public funds (and soon restricted from using private
insurance in Pennsylvania), women who are in desperate straits, will
find more Gosnells. Pennsylvania lawmakers had the chance to stand for
women, for safety, but instead they chose to take a self-righteous stand

“Philly workers need sick-leave bill

POSTED: Tuesday, March 12, 2013, 3:01 AM

In an economy where many of us can at least tread water,
Philadelphia's low-income workers are drowning. About two out of five workers
in Philadelphia have no paid sick leave.

In response, a City Council committee last week approved a
sick-leave ordinance that would require Philadelphia businesses of six or more
employees to provide a limited number of earned, paid sick days. A vote before
the full Council could come as early as this week.

Businesses can easily supply a nominal amount of paid sick
days. Allowing workers to recuperate from illness without fear of docked pay,
or job loss, will result in healthier workers and an overall reduction in
communicable disease. Right now, 90 percent of food-service workers do not have
paid sick days, and about 70 percent go to work sick, according to the
Institute for Women's Policy Research (IWPR). It is estimated that employees
sick at work engender lower productivity, which costs employers $160 billion
per year nationwide.

This is also a women's issue: Women comprise about half of
the workforce, but there is a greater chance of men having paid sick days than
women. The service industry, which has more female employees than men, is not
as likely as other industries to provide paid sick leave. Further, 80 percent
of children's doctor visits are handled by women, yet half of working mothers
do not have paid sick leave, and neither do about two-thirds of women with low
incomes.

Mayor Nutter vetoed a sick-leave bill in 2011, sympathetic
to the businesses that feared the bill would mean extra costs. However, some
business owners have voiced support for the measure, and there is scant proof
that it has damaged job markets.

San Francisco enacted a sick-leave law in 2006, and IWPR has
found that not only do most employers now support it, but also that employees
do not often abuse the law. Gov. Daniel Malloy of Connecticut, the first state
to authorize paid sick leave, said that he has spoken with employers who
"now admit it really wasn't that big of a deal," according to the
Wall Street Journal. A study there showed that the five-day sick-leave policy
cost employers only 0.4 percent of their sales revenue annually.

In addition, according to IWPR, paid sick leave is thought
to provide $52 million in gains to employers annually, primarily due to less
job turnover, while supplying the sick days costs $51 million. Further, the
institute recently released a study indicating that if all employees in
Philadelphia had paid sick days, there would be $10.3 million saved each year
in health-care bills due to a reduction of 12,188 emergency-room visits.

Paid sick leave is good for workers, families, and public
health, and has a nominal impact on businesses. We urge you to contact your
Council member and ask him or her to vote yes.

<![endif]-->March 8 marks the 38<sup>th</sup> annual International
Women’s Day, a day to celebrate women’s rights and the women of all ages and
backgrounds who help change history in their own way. The United Nations and its member states have
celebrated International Women’s Day since 1975, though the day was first
celebrated in 1911, in Europe. Each year
the United Nations chooses a theme and this year they have chosen “A promise is
a promise: Time for action to end violence against women.” Irina Bokova, Director-General of United
Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), issued
the following statement:

“On International Women's Day, we celebrate the strides that
have been made to advance women's rights and the individual heroes, girls and
women, who are making history in societies across the world. This is also a day to cast an objective eye on where we
stand and reflect on the obstacles that remain. Violence against women is one
of the most deadly and widespread violations of women's rights across the
world. Violence takes many shapes — physical, sexual, psychological and
economic — but the result remains the same devastating violation of fundamental
rights and human dignity. There are concerted efforts at all levels to stop
this violence, but progress is haltingly slow.” (Click for more)

women’s contributions to society and the world beyond. Women have acted in war and peace, in the
home and outside, making contributions to science, literature, and the
Revolutionary war, to name a few arenas.
Amongst names like “Rosa Parks” and “Sally Ride” stand our own sisters,
mothers, and other female role models. Women’s
History Month has the predecessors of International Women’s Day, established in
1911, and National Women’s History Week, which was established in 1981. Years after groups had voiced the opinion
that March should be designated Women’s History Month, congress passed
resolutions and in 1995 President Bill Clinton issued the first proclamation to
make it so. This year is particularly
special: March 3 is the 100th year anniversary of the suffragists marching in
Washington, D.C. to call for women’s right to vote. Here is how Philadelphia is celebrating
Women make up only 17% of the PA legislature, on the of the lowest rates in the country. Running for committeeperson is a very easy entry point into electoral politics. You don't need to raise money; you just need the time and willingness to talk to your neighbors. Running for committeeperson is a way to learn grassroots organizing skills, gain leadership experience, and learn how the political system works.

Running for Election Board is an opportunity to ensure that we have fair elections. The Voter ID law, which is slated to be implemented in 2013, has drawn attention to what has been a very low profile position - the Judge of Elections. In each division, the Judge of Elections resolves disputes and makes determinations about voter eligibility in areas where the law is ambiguous. With the enactment of the Voter ID law, the position of Judge of Elections has become much more important. The Majority and Minority inspectors also play an important role in ensuring fair, well-run elections.

Kathy Black

Paul Robeson Lifetime Achievement Award Acceptance Speech

Bread & Roses Community Fund Tribute to Change

June 28, 2012

Thank you so much. Thank you Barbara, Kati, all the planning committee members, everyone who nominated me (Ben & Carol), Casey, Ray, Maura, Simba, and everyone at B&R for putting together this wonderful tribute and for giving me this prestigious honor. More importantly, hank you B&R, for the financial nourishment you’ve provided to countless social change groups in our area. There’s nobody like you; it is so difficult to get this work funded; and it’s safe to say that many critically important campaigns would not have succeeded, and many activist groups would be gone if it weren’t for your investment in their work.

I want to thank my family and my dearest loved ones for coming tonight and for all your love and support. This is a just a fraction of my gigantic family up front here, and they are my rocks –especially my wonderful parents, Joe and Marianne Black, who share this award with me because it was from them I learned all my economic and social justice values. I love you all.

There’s no way I’d ever be a candidate for this award or any other award, if I hadn’t spent the past 15 years working at AFSCME DC47. For decades, our Council has enjoyed a deserved reputation as one of the most progressive unions around, under the leadership of Presidents Tom Cronin and Cathy Scott. They built a position for me and gave me a union home where I could do the health and safety work I love. And they gave me the space and license to do all this coalition work that got me here tonight. So thank you, Tom & Cathy, and all my sisters and brothers at DC47 for the trust you invested in me, and for always saying “yes” to my incessant appeals for donations and dues, institutional support, affiliations, resolutions, and for just generally putting up with me, especially during my long menopausal, bitch on wheels years. (Ray Murphy made me say that. And now he has to buy me a drink.)

I can hardly believe these words are about to come out of my mouth, but thank you also Chief Justice John Roberts, for not raining on our parade! Health care for all, baby. Health care for all.

Is CLUW in the house? Thank God for the sisterhood.

Over the years male labor leaders have periodically told me we don’t need a women’s constituency group– that we’re all one, fighting for the same things.

Not always.

If it weren’t for CLUW, there would be no mention ever of domestic violence, contraceptive equity, or reproductive health on labor’s agenda, even though every one of those issues is directly connected to advancing women’s rights on the job. Pushing for action on these issues hasn’t always been easy, though it has been great fun watching male labor leaders squirm every time we bring up birth control.

There’s still plenty we need to win, and some rights we now need to win again. Happily, a fabulous new generation of smart, confident, skilled women is rising to these challenges. CLUW’s Young Women’s Committee is the envy of the local labor movement, and its future. (Where are you, amazing young women? There they are – my retirement plan, personified.) They’re doing great things, learning everything they can, preparing themselves to be the leaders of this movement we love. They give me confidence that what we’ve built over the last hundred years is going to survive and grow.

Congratulations to tonight’s other terrific honorees. It’s a particular pleasure to be honored with two other CLUW members, my dear sister/girlfriend/partner in crime, Janet Ryder, who has taught me so much; I MISS YOU!; and my brother and dear friend, Jim Savage, the most kick ass, truth-talking, fun and funny labor leader I’ve ever met. Congratulations to you, Jim, Dennis, Nancy, John and everyone who worked so hard to save those refineries and all those good union jobs. We need more victories like this one.

I see so many friends and allies out in the audience tonight. I know you to all be fantastic activists and organizers, and so I’m going to take advantage of my privilege of the moment and ask you to do two things, because that’s what we organizers do .

Please join the Coalition for Healthy Families and Workplaces and help us make Philadelphia the next great city to pass an earned sick leave bill. Call City Council members, ask them to support Bill Greenlee’s bill, and remind them they’re Democrats! They were elected by the people, to represent the interests of the people of our working class city, not Comcast. You can assure them that the Chicken Little Chamber of Commerce’s hysterical rantings are utter nonsense. Capitalism will not collapse if we pass this modest protection so workers can stay home when they or their kids get sick, without risking a paycheck or their job. This is a rare chance in our current ugly political climate to actually advance rights for workers, and we can make it happen if you all help – and there’s lots of ways you can help. BTW, another group of savvy, fabulous young women lead this campaign.

Second, Please join US Labor Against the War. Our government continues to spend trillions on unnecessary wars, weapons, and overseas bases, while our schools, infrastructure and social safety net are on the brink of collapse. It’s obscene; it’s immoral; it must change. Getting Congress to significantly cut military spending and fund human needs is USLAW’s current priority. As a start, we’re passing City Council resolutions around the country, including the one we passed here in Philly a week ago. We are the only organized voice in the history of our labor movement to challenge American foreign policy and do this work. We need your dollars and your energy to amplify that voice and start shifting American policy away from waging war toward waging peace. Uslaboragainstwar.org – please check it out. (Membership forms for CLUW and USLAW available up front after the show.)

“We ask for nothing that is not right, and herein lies the great power of our demand.”
Paul Robeson said that. He wasn’t talking about the labor movement specifically, but it’s just as true for us.

We have the privilege of working on those issues that most drive our passions, and that contribute to positive change in the world – plus we get paid union wages and benefits to do it. I am so proud and thrilled and overwhelmed to get this award. But the truth is, the work has been its own reward, and I am grateful every day that I have been able to spend my working life doing what I believe in down to my core.

Movements and union work are not about individual achievements, and I’ve accomplished absolutely nothing by myself. I thank every one of you for all the amazing work you do, and for being my sisters and brothers in the cause. When we fight together we win.

Thanks one last time to B&R for this wonderful night. I’ve always loved the name of this community fund. The Bread & Roses strike is iconic in labor history, especially for women workers. Those immigrant women were so abused and deprived, yet their strike demands were not just for better wages and working conditions, but for a full, meaningful life, enriched by the art, love and beauty all our spirits need. I’ve tried to incorporate those elements into my work and my life too – with special emphasis recently on Art and love – because after all, as my favorite old union adage goes, “nothing’s too good for the working class.”

Thank you so very, very much.

I have been attending NOW conferences regularly for the past ten years. I believe the first was in 2001, the year I became Philadelphia NOW chapter President. At that point I felt an obligation to attend. I recall that at every one of these conferences NOW was engaged in soul-searching—how can we attract more young women, more women of color? The soul-searching continues.

If attendance at national NOW conferences is any indication, NOW has been more successful at attracting young women than women of color (of all ages). It seems that every year the number of women of color at national conferences is smaller. I checked my perception against that of other regular NOW conference attendees and they confirmed my perception. (Of course these are subjective recollections. I have no hard data to back this up.)

The number of young feminists at national conferences appears to have remained relatively constant over the past decade, but the faces change. While many older members tend to attend national conferences faithfully year after year, this is much less likely to be the case with younger members. NOW members in their sixties, seventies, and eighties have been involved in the organization for over three/four decades and they generally are intensely loyal to it; with younger members, identification with NOW is much less powerful. They are not necessarily convinced that membership in NOW is essential to the feminist project. If NOW is to survive and thrive it must build a diverse cadre of young feminists deeply committed to the organization.

One of the most powerful presentations at the conference was “Young Feminists Organizing.” NOW's young, dynamic Action Vice President Erin Matson opened the session with a tribute to young feminists: “Younger women are leading the feminist movement--online and in the streets.” She acknowledged the tremendous achievements of an older generation of feminists, but the suggestion was clear—-it’s time for generational change.

The first panelist was Sandra Fluke, the young woman who has become a feminist rock star thanks to Rush Limbaugh’s response to her congressional testimony on access to contraception. Fluke thanked NOW for “having my back the past few months.” Like Matson, she focused on the contributions of young feminists: “Young feminists are on the move. If some were under the illusion that they were living in a post-feminist world, they have awakened from that.” Fluke suggested that NOW use the language of “gender equality” when trying to reach young people. She noted that younger women are concerned that stereotypes about masculinity may be oppressive to the young men in their lives—their brothers, partners and friends—and that young women and men might be more easily reached by using the language of gender equality. Fluke may be onto something here. I recall some of my Women’s Studies students at Community College of Philadelphia expressing a similar point.

Krystal Ball

The next speaker, former congressional candidate and MSNBC political commenter Krystal Ball, was introduced as the woman who made in it safe for the Facebook generation to run for office. Ball had forcefully pushed back against an attempt to use sexually explicit Facebook photos as a means of derailing her candidacy. Ball’s speech focused on young feminists’ response to Republican attacks on reproductive rights, including her campaign to boycott Rush Limbaugh because of his scurrilous attacks on Sandra Fluke. Ball stressed that the next battle will be against Republican governors who want to opt out of the Affordable Care Act’s expansion of Medicaid. As with many young feminists, Ball’s feminism is intertwined with a wide range of social justice issues.

Tamika Mallory

The third speaker, Tamika Mallory, discussed issues such as wage inequality and violence against women in the context of their impact on women of color. Mallory is the national executive director of one of the nation's leading civil rights organizations, National Action Network, founded by Reverend Al Sharpton. Just 31 years old, she is the youngest national executive director in the group's history. Mallory focused on voting rights issues, which she characterized as the major civil rights issue of the 21st century--one more battle we thought we had won in the 1960’s which we are fighting all over again.

For many young feminists, their feminism is intertwined with wide range of social justice issues. Of course many older feminists recognize the interconnections, but young feminists have often placed greater emphasis on the way gender justice is intertwined with issues of race, class and sexuality. It’s perhaps a testimony to the gains that women have made that young feminists can do this. In my book on second wave feminism, FEMINISM IN PHILADELPHIA: THE GLORY YEARS, 1968-1982, founding member Lillian Ciarrochi argued “NOW was established to end sexism against women … The focus had to be women, women.” She was making an argument similar to that made by many in the Civil Rights movement in the 1960’s--that it was necessary to focus laser-like on civil rights for African-Americans and not get distracted by other issues. She now sees the feminist movement as at different stage: “Now I think the other issues are all intertwined. We’ve always known that but we had to focus [on sexism] in that way, in the early 70s. If we hadn’t we wouldn’t have gotten as much done. It’s the same with Martin Luther King and the civil rights movement.”

Many younger feminists have taken Women’s Studies courses organized around the intersection of race, class, gender and sexuality and their approach to feminist organizing reflects this. Although NOW has evolved in its approach and for some time has focused on these interconnections, not all feminists and social movement historians have recognized the extent to which NOW has embraced a more complex, inclusive approach to gender justice.

NOW’s leadership is committed to an inclusive vision but has yet to figure out how to make the organization more attractive to a diverse group of young feminists and to women of color of all ages. The organization is currently involved in major effort to revamp its structure. I attended a series of workshop on “ Modernizing NOW” and had plenty of time to think about what structural changes would make NOW more attractive to a diverse group of young people. I got what I thought was a brilliant new idea—-NOW should become involved in the global feminist movement. When I shared my idea informally with others, I discovered that many people were thinking along the exact same lines, suggesting this is an idea whose time has come.

NOW is a national organization with a domestic agenda. When NOW was founded in 1966 there was no visible global feminist movement. Much has changed in 46 years, including the capacity to connect with feminist organizations around the globe. NOW’s programming at national conferences reflects this. Among the workshops were several which placed feminist issues in global context: “Sex Trafficking - A Growing Criminal Industry that Harms Women, Children”; “Women Workers of the World: Unite to Fight for Our Dignity and Our Rights!” and the plenary session with Eve Ensler, founder of V-Day, the global movement to end violence against women and girls.

However, NOW has no organizational connections with the global feminist movement. It’s not at all clear how such connections could be forged. It’s not like there is one over-arching global feminist organization with which NOW could affiliate. But if we were to figure out how to do this I think NOW would be a lot more attractive to a diverse group of women. Many recent immigrants—-from Africa and the Caribbean, Latin America and Asia—have a global perspective and a reconfigured NOW with an international dimension might be more attractive to such women. Also younger women whose education is increasingly international in orientation—-e.g., all those study abroad programs—-might be more receptive to a feminist organization directly involved in the global feminist movement. This is an issue the committee charged with recommendations to “modernize” NOW’s structure should seriously consider.
karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14135222421004804653noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33334201.post-29034456636375052732012-04-23T13:06:00.001-05:002012-04-23T13:16:25.660-05:00Vote for Pennsylvania NOW Endorsed Candidate Patrick Murphy for Attorney General in Primary Election Tuesday, April 24

There’s a reason so many labor unions and progressive groups have
endorsed Patrick Murphy.
For one thing, he keeps his promises. See Dan U-A’s great post describing Murphy leading the successful fight to end DADT at http://www.youngphillypolitics.com/. When Patrick
tells us that he will be a strong advocate for Pennsylvania families targeted by predatory

that he will follow through.

This is a real
opportunity here. Let’s support the people that have followed through on
progressive fights, and get the word out on this race. Please, please, please:
vote, and spread the word. Let’s not waste this
chance.

Patrick
Murphy has the broad social vision we need in an Attorney General. His opponent
Kathleen Kane presents herself as “A prosecutor, not a politician.” That’s
precisely the problem. We don’t need prosecutorial talent—there’s plenty of that
around, and anyhow, it’s the rare case that’s tried by the Attorney General in
person. What we need in the Attorney
General of Pennsylvania is political
courage and political ability—the courage and ability to go against the
grain, to doubt received opinion, and to protect the rights of the citizens of
Pennsylvania.
Such courage has characterized Patrick Murphy’s entire short but
distinguished career.

Despite
his Army background, he always had the courage to challenge Army orthodoxy when
he thought it misguided. He was able to
see, and loudly state, that the Iraq War had been a serious strategic
mistake. He was also able to see, and loudly state, that the “Don’t Ask, Don’t
Tell” policy was discriminatory and misguided. This gave President Obama the
knowledgeable support he needed to repeal it. Patrick has shown political
courage in other ways, as well. He was the first elected official from outside
of Illinois to
endorse Barack Obama for President—at a time when no one thought Obama had a
chance.

Perhaps
the easiest way to assess what Patrick would do as Attorney General is to
consider a few of the positions he took as Congressman. Here, then, in no
particular order:

Patrick
helped enact the most sweeping set of financial regulatory reforms
since the Great Depression. These reforms expanded the authority of state
Attorneys General to protect the public from financial
skullduggery.

According to Julia Ramsey, President of the
Pennsylvania
chapter of the National Organization for Women, “Patrick is a proven leader on women’s
issues…He’s 100 percent pro-choice and will refuse to enforce the
unconstitutional mandatory ultrasound bill. He helped strengthen laws that
prohibit gender discrimination in the workplace….” (For a complete list of Phila
NOW endorsed candidates see http://www.philanow.blogspot.com/)

Patrick
has been a leader on environmental issues, and has helped pass laws both
against the dumping perpetrated by industrial polluters and in favor of
renewable energy. His leadership in this area is particularly important because
of the ongoing drilling for natural gas in the Marcellus Shale. The gas drillers
have the Governor and the Republican legislators in their pocket, it would seem.
And it may take more than prosecutorial competence to protect the citizens of
Pennsylvania
from the environmental havoc they can wreak.

As a military lawyer prosecuting terrorists in
Iraq, Patrick offers courtroom competence, but he offers
far more. He has the potential to
be an Attorney general in the mold of Eliot Spitzer—without the sex scandals, of
course. Please spread the word!!

The Philadelphia Chapter of the National Organization for Women Political Action Committee is proud to announce its endorsement of Numa St. Louis for State Representative from Pennsylvania District 202. St. Louis is the only challenger vying for the seat held for almost 40 years by the incumbent.

Terri Falbo, President of Philadelphia NOW, issued the following statement on the group's endorsement: “Numa St. Louis is unequivocal in his support for women’s rights -- especially of women’s access to healthcare. Given the current repressive environment in the Pennsylvania Legislature and its ”War on Women”, Philadelphia NOW is focused on endorsing candidates, such as St. Louis, who support women’s rights without regard to political expediency. As an educator and community organizer, St. Louis has a record as an advocate for more accessible healthcare, sound educational reform and immigrant rights.”

Numa St. Louis accepted the endorsement stating: “Women are the back bone of our community. There is a movement afoot nationwide and in Pennsylvania to deprive women of their rights. I will fight to safeguard their rights including access to reproductive healthcare. I am honored and humbled to receive the endorsement of Philadelphia Chapter of NOW. Knowing their history and legacy of fighting for women’s rights, I will honor this trust placed in me and pledge to be an advocate, an ally and fight for women’s rights on all fronts.”

Numa St. Louis, who -- unlike the incumbent -- has consistently been pro-choice, has pledged to be more responsive to his constituents, while not abusing per-diem funds or enhancing his personal assets at the taxpayers’ expense. St. Louis understands women’s economic security is fundamental to women’s rights. As a legislator, he envisions setting a New Direction for all Pennsylvanians, including women. He intends to fuel economic development in measureable ways, including leveraging available investments and financial resources and combining it with the power of the major employers and anchor Institutions in and around the 202nd District.

Philadelphia NOW looks forward to sending Numa St. Louis to Harrisburg to fight for the rights of women and all Pennsylvanians who need an opportunity to succeed.

Read more about Numa St. Louis at herekarenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14135222421004804653noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33334201.post-53980332443157470792012-04-04T11:06:00.000-05:002012-04-04T11:06:11.067-05:00
Please plan to join
